Humanities: LNGview, Metacognition, No Red Ink & More

Metacognition & LNG View

We're going to follow a process to practice our metacognition

1. Read this article from BrainFacts.org on metacognition.

Important: Only read up to this moment here

(Of course, you can always go back and read more later.)

2.  Use our paint chip to determine your level of understanding of the article.  Record that.

3.  Read it again.

4.  Use the paint chip to determine your level of understanding of the article after the second reading.  Record that.

5. Work with a partner and think aloud through the article.  This should leads to lots of talking through and lots of scribbling on the paper copies provided.

6. Use the paint chip to determine your level of understanding after the thinkalouding.

7. Complete the LNGview form (it will be in your inbox) and be sure to include the levels of understanding you had at each step.

No Red Ink
Common Mistakes: Your/You're #1 is in the assignment section.  After LNGview go there and tackle that assignment.  It serves as a pre-assessment for the upcoming quiz.

  • Your = possessive

Four months ago, I borrowed your copy of Miley Cyrus' latest album and never gave it back.  Sorry.

  • You're = contraction of "You are"

You're a tremendous friend for only texting me 47 times to bring that Miley Cyrus album back.  Seriously.

Edutopia: Learning Styles Quiz

After No Red Ink, complete this survey and be certain to record your results by taking screenshots.

Talking about the results would make a really great blog post.  Actually, everything you do in class today could make a great blog post.  Take pictures of your thinkaloud notes and put them up on your blog (make sure to flip them if you use your laptop to take the pics).

Humanities: Reflections & Self Assessment, LNGView & No Red Ink

We'll start class with LNG View & No Red Ink today.

The LNG View reading and form have been sent to your Gmail.  It's also here if you need it.

You have a second assignment in www.noredink.com around common mistakes with their/there/they're & to/two/too.  Assignment one was tremendous.  Most folks did really well.  So, we will have a quiz on Friday around their/there/they're & to/two/too.

Remember, if you don't do well on the NoRedInk quizzes, you can always retake them.  You just have to first demonstrate evidence of learning.  This you might do by doing some practice work on NoRedInk and sending us screenshots of your results.  You might do it by watching grammar related videos and blogging about what you learned from them.  You might write a song that show's you understand.  Lots of things you can do.  And then retake the quiz.  We replace the new grade with the old. (Unless you do worse, then the old grade stands.)

From there, you will have time to craft your reflections on your projects and complete your self-assessments.

What am I talking about?  Check the project rubric embedded below here.

You have two teachers here to help you.  Make it so, my good friends.

AND MAKE SURE YOU COMPLETE THE EXIT TICKET!!!!!

Humanities: LoNGview, NoRedInk, StoryCorps & Of Mice & Men

Note: You can do everything up to the blogging discussion w/o Mr. Ryder saying a word.  Just jump right into it.  We'll be having people move around to places in the room based on how much help and direction they would like.

LoNGview
Today we begin with a LoNGview reading and discussion of this article from Fast CoExist about building sustainable low income housing.

MUGS/NoRedInk
We will do a quick MUGS exercise around it's/its and get on NoRedInk to do it.  Look for the next assignment in your list.

Here's a video to watch to help w/ it's/its.

StoryCorps
From there we take a look at the StoryCorps site and do a little spelunking.  Make sure you check out the mobile lab and see what sorts of ideas it gives you for our recording booth project (if that's something you'd like to be a part of.)

  • What sort of stories would you want to hear?
  • What sorts of stories are you hearing on this site
  • How might you be able to capture these sorts of stories?
Blogging
There will be time to work on your blogs today as well as look at the new expectations for the blogs.  Look at the blogging rubric in the right hand sidebar.

We'll end the day with some continued reading of Of Mice & Men and the beginnings of our second 3-4-Thinking graphic organizer.

Req'd Post:
Find a song that would belong on a soundtrack for Of Mice & Men.  Post the song/embed the video and write a paragraph explaining your thinking.
Be sure to check the blogging rubric in the right hand sidebar; to meet the standard you must now make posts connect to outside information and/or another student's thinking

Be Thinking:
Are you thinking about doing a photo essay, story corps?  Do you want to take on the design challenge of making the recording booth? What would your angle be in tackling these questions and ideas? What questions do you have?

Humanities: LoNGview & No Red Ink & Getting Our House In Order

Today we'll start with a LoNGview by going to our class Symbaloo.  Find an article of interest from any of the resources available.

Then we'll have our first No Red Ink experience.  The class code you need is in your email. It will astound.

From there, we'll talk about where we are headed next with our work and the importance of getting your work in if you have not already.  Grades close next Friday, Nov. 1st.

Make sure you look at the required blog post for the week and prepare for the vocab quiz tomorrow.
