Humanities: Joni James Photography Workshop Day Two: Critique

Today in class, Joni James will return to work with us on our Capture Our Culture photo essay design challenge.  We're in the middle of Experiment phase here.   (Note:  We didn't complete Empathy phase as intended this week.  That's on me.  I have a plan though.  It could bring us some interesting feedback and understanding.)

We'll focus on critiquing photos today to improve upon the composition skills Joni provided us last week.  Here are the notes she gave us.

Humanities: Feedback and Little Things Essay Intro

We'll start with our last few Composition & Culture presentations and some feedback for those presenters.

From there we'll break into our four stations because TUESDAY!

STATION 1.  FRANKENWORD with BOISELLE.  You'll be using Roots 12 to have a FrankenWord experience with Ms. Boiselle.

STATION 2.  FEEDBACK TRENDS.  (Production Phase of DEEP dt) Go through the feedback you've received on your Composition & Culture presentation.   Answer the following two questions in either a blog post OR an email to Ryder/Brackett

A. What trends do you notice across the feedback?  Things people noticed OR things people seemed to overlook that you noticed?

B. How might you apply this feedback to a revision/next iteration of your presentation?  What's your action plan?

Haven't finished your presentation?  Use this time to work on it.

STATION 3.  FEEDBACK with BRACKETT.  Have a conversation with Mr. Brackett about the presentations and how a next iteration could improve the situation.

STATION 4.  BRAINSTORMING and ROSE/BUD/THORN with RYDER.

Today you are being assigned your next essay.  The first submission draft will be due early next week.  Exact date TBA.

Little Things Essay

How might we design essays in which we share experiences of our own, or those of others, where a little thing had a significant (big) impact?   Consider objects, moments in time, single experiences, interactions . . .

In this station you will first brainstorm and spidea (word association) and then sort those ideas into Roses (gorgeous ideas), Buds (neat thoughts but not sure where to go with them), and Thorns (stay away from these ideas OR wrangle them carefully)

We will be using Post-Its.  Lots of Post-Its.

Humanities: Culture & Composition Photo Essay DT Challenge Rubric

Humanities: Empathy Phase: Photo Essay Challenge

Last Wednesday we mapped our our cultural identities based on the eight components of culture.  Each circle represents a component, the placement and overlapping reveal how much, or how little, each plays a role in our lives.  After personal maps, we collaborated in groups on maps of our community culture.  This worked served as part of our Discovery phase.

This is a shot of my #sketchnotes plan for the day.

Here are some of the insights and trends we mapped after looking at our models.

This gave us some fuel for going into Thursday where we spent our energy identifying the various users we may have for our photo essays.  This marked our first day of Empathy phase in our DEEP design thinking process.

What did we notice from our culture work on Wednesday?  We revisited it on Thursday.

And that led us to Friday where we had at the opportunity to talk with the crew from South Carolina again, if only briefly.  We had a couple of class leaders take on the task of conducting an empathy conversation.  This gave us some valuable insights as to how we should shape our photo essays this week.

This takes us into Monday . . .

Monday we dive into Experiment mode.  Folks should be coming with photos they've taken so far and start playing with formats for their photo essays.

There's time to brainstorm and play and sketchnote and storyboard.  We'll be using some of our 8 Box techniques and other means of getting to great photo essays.

Tuesday will be more experimenting and then Wednesday, we practice.

Humanities: Reflections & Self Assessment, LNGView & No Red Ink

We'll start class with LNG View & No Red Ink today.

The LNG View reading and form have been sent to your Gmail.  It's also here if you need it.

You have a second assignment in www.noredink.com around common mistakes with their/there/they're & to/two/too.  Assignment one was tremendous.  Most folks did really well.  So, we will have a quiz on Friday around their/there/they're & to/two/too.

Remember, if you don't do well on the NoRedInk quizzes, you can always retake them.  You just have to first demonstrate evidence of learning.  This you might do by doing some practice work on NoRedInk and sending us screenshots of your results.  You might do it by watching grammar related videos and blogging about what you learned from them.  You might write a song that show's you understand.  Lots of things you can do.  And then retake the quiz.  We replace the new grade with the old. (Unless you do worse, then the old grade stands.)

From there, you will have time to craft your reflections on your projects and complete your self-assessments.

What am I talking about?  Check the project rubric embedded below here.

You have two teachers here to help you.  Make it so, my good friends.

AND MAKE SURE YOU COMPLETE THE EXIT TICKET!!!!!

Humanities: Work Session

Today you will have time to do work.

Start by working on roots 6. Remember, we brainstormed a number of products you could make that are not word maps.

In your inbox, you have an exit ticket that MUST BE COMPLETED at the end of the day.  This will be an academic initiative grade.

  • Exceed the standard by providing DETAILED, SPECIFIC information about your work for the day.
  • Meet the standard by providing specific information about your work for the day.
  • Partially meet the standard by providing some information about your work for the day.  How might you go deeper?
  • Do not yet meet the standard by providing minimal information about your work for the day. How can we help you fill this out more effectively?

Humanities: Closing Arguments, Photo Essays, StoryCorps & Roots Quizzes

Yesterday, we did an activity around the closing arguments, helping determine to what extent various characters are responsible for the death of Lennie.  We worked big on sets of desks, sorting arguments into ethos, pathos and logos.
http://www.leaderthoughtship.com/2012/12/using-ethos-pathos-and-logos-for.html
Here's a video on ethos, pathos & logos that could help you when we aren't around to explain.

Here are some pictures of the work we did in class.

Today we begin with our Roots 5 quiz.

From there, we will look at examples of how to make

a) StoryCorps

and

b) Photo Essay

After going through the examples and the process of making each of those, you will have time to do one of the following:

a) Write your closing argument - Due Friday, December 5 (solo)
b) Plan your photo essay or story corps using storyboard materials (solo)
c) Start the design thinking process around our mobile Humanities booth project

Use this video to help with your interview planning.

As well interview techniques and guidelines at StoryCorps.

Req'd Creative Post:
Get suited up.  Using a tool such a Polyvore.com or Pinterest or even just by finding images from various sources, design your "lawyer" wardrobe for yourself.  What would you wear in the trial of the death of Lennie and why?

Also, what would the person on trial wear?  Post images and explain your thinking there.

The idea is to consider the types of appeal (ethos, pathos, logos) and how what we wear can influence how audiences think.  Also, consider, what makes this extra challenging for people from poverty to tell their stories and be heard?
