Humanities: Roots Quiz 4, Photo Essays & Of Mice & Men

We'll start with Roots Quiz 4.  Look for it in your e-mail. Word Map #4 due today as well.

From there, we'll arrange the room in similar fashion to what we did in yesterday's class. Those folks who want more T-direction, sit near the T, the further way you sit, the more independently you believe you can work today.

That work will revolve around understanding photo essays, much as yesterday involved getting an understanding of StoryCorps.

Note: What would be great material for a blog post?  Find a photo essay or a story corps story, link to it on your blog and share your thinking/reaction.

Explore the Photo Essays found on the TIME Magazine Website: http://content.time.com/time/photoessays
Using the same questions as yesterday for continuity:
  • What sort of stories would you want to see?
  • What sorts of stories are you seeing on this site
  • How might you be able to capture these sorts of stories?

Reading aloud (two rooms)Time for the second Three4Thinking (Due Tuesday 11/12).

AP Lit 3G: Feedback, Dolls, Raisins & Andre's Mother

We'll open today by taking out our projects again.

WHAT?!?!  But didn't we just?

Yes.  Here's how it is all going to go down.

1) Display your book projects again for a 2nd gallery walk.  (3 min.)

2) Provide as much as quality FB as possible (I noticed statements & questions) on Post-Its.  Think about the sorting we did last class. (7 min.)

3) Take a moment to see what FB you received on your project this time around. (3 min.)

4) As a class, sort all of the new FB into categories that make sense to you. (5 min.)

5) Now, here's a new wrinkle.  Go sit w/ a piece of paper or laptop and brainstorm qualities of effective FB   (i.e. "specific," "meaningful,") (2 min.)

6) Turn to a partner and share your lists.  (2 min.)

7) Choose three key/vital items to put on Post-Its (one item per sticky) (2 min)

8) Put those 3 items up on the board.  (2 min.)

9) As a class, sort those qualities into a way that makes sense.  Consider the relationship between the different qualities -- what unites them? makes them unique?  (3 - 5 min.)

10) Now, go over to the big huge board of past FB and see if you can find examples from the FB we've given this week that reflect the qualities.

And then we do some acting.

PACE: Beats & Beats & Beats

We'll start today by playing in www.beatlab.com and seeking what sorts of sweetness we can build in there.

That will take us to an exploration of Beat Making Lab, an amazing program that started at the University of North Carolina and is now doing work around the world to use music as an agent for change and justice.

To demonstrate understanding of the work at Beat Making Lab, we will use the Three 4 Thinking graphic organizer.  The fillable form is available in your PACE 2013 OUT folder  on Google Drive.

From there we will get into our Ohana teams and continue shaping the music unit.  As a group, you will discuss the sorts of work you would like to do, would not like to do, the essential questions you would like to answer, and then bring that thinking back to me.  We'll be using a different format for this conversation than we've used before.

1) Ohana Teams
  • * Discuss the unit so far
  • What you like, what concerns you
  • What else can we/should we do?
2) Send Ohana Rep to Conf. w/ Mr Ryder
* Share thinking
* Collaborate w/ Mr Ryder

3) Mr Ryder goes and revises unit plans to reflect Ohana input

Humanities: LoNGview, NoRedInk, StoryCorps & Of Mice & Men

Note: You can do everything up to the blogging discussion w/o Mr. Ryder saying a word.  Just jump right into it.  We'll be having people move around to places in the room based on how much help and direction they would like.

LoNGview
Today we begin with a LoNGview reading and discussion of this article from Fast CoExist about building sustainable low income housing.

MUGS/NoRedInk
We will do a quick MUGS exercise around it's/its and get on NoRedInk to do it.  Look for the next assignment in your list.

Here's a video to watch to help w/ it's/its.

StoryCorps
From there we take a look at the StoryCorps site and do a little spelunking.  Make sure you check out the mobile lab and see what sorts of ideas it gives you for our recording booth project (if that's something you'd like to be a part of.)

  • What sort of stories would you want to hear?
  • What sorts of stories are you hearing on this site
  • How might you be able to capture these sorts of stories?
Blogging
There will be time to work on your blogs today as well as look at the new expectations for the blogs.  Look at the blogging rubric in the right hand sidebar.

We'll end the day with some continued reading of Of Mice & Men and the beginnings of our second 3-4-Thinking graphic organizer.

Humanities: What We Did on Monday & Tuesday

On Monday we broke down our goals for the poverty unit and the ways Mr. Ryder & Mr. Dunbar think we should tackle it.  Here are some pics of our thinking and plans.  Note that the second pic features the changes made after we listed everything.

Mr. Dunbar explains what happened in class on Tuesday:

The first thing we did in class today was make a list of all of the characters from OMaM on the board. This was easy and quick and numerous people offered up names.

Once the names were listed we assigned a quick (20 minute) vocab activity. The students chose one of the characters from the list. Once they chose a character, their task was to write about that character's background. Basically, where did they come from and how did they come to be at that ranch at that time. In order to complete this, they needed to include five root-based words from list 4 and five root-based words from lists 1-3 for a total of ten root-based words. A few students shared out some pretty creative and relatively far-fetched stories.

Next, we had two volunteers looking for critical feedback on the Three 4 Thinkings due today. We talked as a class about enhancing these by including the "so what?" portion. Why is what you wrote important? Why did you select that? -- Your next Three4Thinking on the next chunk of reading is due on Friday 11/8.

Finally, we explored one of our essential questions for the unit by watching and discussing THIS video: http://www.upworthy.com/by-day-he-wears-a-suit-by-afternoon-hes-in-rags-by-choice?c=fea

Class ended with Mr. Ryder starting on the next chunk of reading ending on page 52.

PACE: New Blogging Expectations & the Music Is Poetry Is Music

We started today by talking about the new blogging expectations -- the rubric is available in the sidebar.

Then we'll look at my thinking on the music unit & you folks will do some design work based on my ideas.  We'll work in cards and on a big table.  There will be pictures here when we are done.

And here are those pictures of my thinking out loud about the music/poetry unit.  You will be doing this same work on Thursday, so be ready for that.  Plus, we'll look at Beat Lab and the work that is happening there.

Humanities: Plan & Blog for Of Mice & Men

Here's the plan based on what was said in class. We'll also build a recording booth.
